Can diatom motility indices reflect excess fine sediment condition in streams?

چکیده

The diatom motility trait is widely used in bioassessment studies, however, there no strong consensus as to what environmental conditions reflects. We random forest models explore the behavior of several diatom-based indices and examined whether stronger motility-environmental relationships could be developed by controlling for factors that influence natural sediment loads co-occur with anthropogenic loading. Across study area, median values most stressors were low; streambed fine sediments ranged from 0 100% (median: 6.7%) total phosphorus concentrations 2587 µg L?1 17 L?1). Depending on index, abundance motile taxa between 8 47%, was highest plains ecoregion. Few sites dominated taxa, only 9 having a relative highly >50%. Refinement did result improved model performance; RF had lowest RMSE (0.11) variables explaining 34.9% variability index. Benthic Diatom Based Indices for Water Quality Assessment in Two Subtropical Streams

Benthic diatoms have been universally used as indicators to assess water quality in lotic ecosystems. However, most diatom-based indices developed in Europe have not been widely used or tested in other continents such as Asia or Oceania. This study compared the performance of 14 widely-applied diatom indices in assessing ecological conditions in subtropical streams in South East Queensland (SEQ...

What’s in a name? – Diatom classification should reflect systematic relationships

Large numbers of diatom taxa are currently being described each year and molecular data sets are providing phylogenetic evidence that challenges the traditional systematic arrangement of diatoms, but is such information being integrated into the classification? The traditional diatom classification originated as an aid to identification rather than as an arrangement expressing perceived relatio...

Diatom-based interpretation of sediment banding in an urbanized lake

Sediment stratigraphy and diatom succession were studied in an 80.5-cm core taken from the deepest part of Third Sister Lake, a small kettle hole in a recently urbanized landscape of southeastern Michigan. Alternating light clay and dark organic bands documented sporadic inputs of clay from outside the basin during rain events, rather than annual laminations. Urban construction activity also di...
